Teaching Philosophy

Master Chong understands that few people today are willing to spend their first three years of practice doing nothing except zhan zhuang (standing meditation). As such, though he often drives home to his students the importance of zhuang training, he often begins teaching a novice the five basic fists within a few months of joining.

Master Chong does not hold to the antiquated notion that the master must never reveal all of his secrets to his disciples; he is generous in sharing his knowledge. Of course, the internal arts are an unusually difficult branch of the martial disciplines to comprehend both cognitively as well as somatically, and ofttimes even the clearest instruction makes sense only in the light of later self-discovery. Master Chong is particularly adept at assessing a student’s level of understanding and teaching neither too much nor too little for him or her at any one time.
